Pit Bulls in the Workforce

December 27, 2016 by Samantha Edwards 2 Comments

Besides being incredibly loving, silly, social, and eager-to-please pets, pit bulls also have pit bulls in the workforceextraordinary value in the workforce. It is perhaps these qualities, coupled with their intelligence, loyalty, athletic ability, stamina, and drive, that make pit bulls the ideal pick for specialized jobs that have a significant impact on our society. A few jobs that pit bulls excel at include:

1. Drug detection. Their ability to sniff out dangerous drugs makes pit bulls excellent police dogs. A pit bull named Popsicle (he was found in an old freezer where he was left to die after being used as bait for dog fights) has the largest recorded single drug find in Texas history – over 3,000 pounds of cocaine with a street value of nearly $1.4 million.

2. Explosive Detection. Some dogs have a talent for detecting explosives, which makes them perfect for military service. A pit bull called Sergeant Stubby, for example, has been called the most decorated war dog of World War I and the only dog to be nominated for rank and then promoted to sergeant through combat. Stubby served for 18 months and participated in 17 battles on the Western Front, where he was wounded in action twice, saved his entire platoon by warning them of a poison gas attack, found and comforted the wounded, and single-handedly captured a German soldier.

3. Search and rescue (SAR). Pit bulls Cheyenne, Dakota, and Tahoe are top-rated SAR dogs. The dogs have helped save the lives of many people over the years. They are so good, in fact, that Dakota and her owner Kris Crawford were requested by NASA to assist in the recovery of astronauts after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. Kris and her dogs were even awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award in recognition of their valuable contributions to the community for over a decade.

4. Therapy/emotional support. Pit bulls’ gentle, affectionate nature make them wonderful therapy dogs, and are frequently used to help veterans who have been diagnosed with PTSD as well as people with other mental or physical illnesses. Check out therapy dogs Zen and Blueberry.

pit bulls in the workforceThere are a number of organizations across the nation that are dedicated to training pit bulls for the workforce. Pits for Patriots for example, specializes in training qualified pit bulls from rescues and shelters in the Chicago area to work as service, therapy, skilled companion, and companion dogs for U.S. military veterans and first responders. Animal Farm Foundation, whose mission is to secure equal treatment and opportunity for pit bulls, has formed a collaboration with Austin Pets Alive! and Universal K9 so that rescued and sheltered pit bulls can be selected and considered for detection dog work, which is traditionally reserved for purebred, purpose-bred dogs. It is because of efforts like these that pit bulls are able to prove themselves as treasured members of the modern workforce, fighting the stigma one dog at a time.

Pit Bull Caitlyn Named Survivor of the Year

December 24, 2015 by Samantha Edwards Leave a Comment

As this year comes to a close, we are elated to hear that abused pit bull turned animal rights advocate, Caitlyn, has been named People Magazine’s best survival story of 2015. In May, Caitlyn was found wandering the streets of North Charleston, South Carolina, with her muzzle taped tightly shut, her tongue sticking out and bleeding. It appeared that she had been in that condition for several days, unable to eat or drink. For a moment rescuers were unsure if she would survive, but she has indeed overcome the odds. She underwent multiple surgeries to reconstruct her lips, tongue, and cheeks and, despite a visible scar that runs across her face, has recovered beautifully.

The man who is accused of taping Caitlyn’s muzzle shut to keep her quiet has been arrested and sits in jail as he awaits trial next year. Caitlyn has found a new loving family to call home and continues to gain national recognition as a symbol for abused animals everywhere. Caitlyn was featured in People’s annual pet awards issue (which will hit newsstands on December 21st), appearing in the “Hero Pets” section with her own photo shoot spread. The Charleston Animal Society has also started a movement using the hashtag #IamCaitlyn as a reminder that Caitlyn stands for every abused and abandoned dog in shelters.

Caitlyn’s story is one of resilience, strength, and willingness to love despite cruelty. We’re inspired and, of course, glad to see some positive press about a beautiful pit bull! We hope others will be reminded by her story that there are so many shelter animals waiting to be adopted into loving homes.

Pit Bull Owners Show Their Support

February 20, 2012 by z3admin Leave a Comment

This amazing video was put together by the Humane Society for Hamilton County in celebration of their upcoming pit bull education month festivities – including the “Parade-a-Bull“.

Kudos to the proud pit bull owners from all walks of life showing their support for the breed they love including a police officer, fire chief, pediatrician, pastor, humane society director and sportscaster.

A few favorite quotes from the video:

“A combination of myths, biased media reporting, exploitation of these dogs by criminals and irreponsible pet owners, has created an inaccurate stereotype of the breed and also the people who own and love them.”

“The American Pit Bull Terrier, a dog that has played an important role in american culture and history for over 200 years before falling victim to those who would use their strength and loyalty against them.”

A Pitbull and Chihuahua Love Story

November 30, 2010 by z3admin 8 Comments

The story below came to me via one of the many animal rescue email lists of which I am a member. Please take this opportunity, whether you’re snuggled up to your pittie cuddle buddy or prefer to remain on the other side of the fence from a Pit Bull, to put your stereotypes aside and read this story for what it truly is – A Love Story.

I am a Pennsylvania State Dog Warden and I received a call concerning two strays that showed up on a front porch early one morning.

When I got there, this is who greeted me: A female Pit Bull and a male Chihuahua .. The Chihuahua was guarding the Pit Bull!!!

They looked to have been on their own for a while. The Chihuahua was missing fur and the Pit Bull had an injured paw. I was able to slip a leash over the Pit Bull and walk her into a cage and put her in my truck.

However, the Chihuahua would not allow me to get near him but would not leave the Pit Bull behind…….So I thought of a plan to get the Chihuahua into my truck. [Read more…]
