Pit Bulls in Time

Once upon a time, the American Pit Bull Terrier was a highly revered war hero and respected family pet. The American Pit Bull Terrier was referred to by many as a “nanny dog” because of the way they look after, display gentleness toward and care for children. The pit bull’s likeness was used in print advertisements as a symbol of stability and honor. 

In an effort to get back to the ‘glory days’ of these dogs, I have compiled an album of some great historical photos showing Pit Bulls of the past. While it’s hard to pick a favorite, I’d have to say I am partial to the picture of Hellen Keller with her beloved Pit Bull.  Enjoy your trip and looking at these vintage Pit Bull photos. Mixed Breed Pit Bulls

Many new dog owners are often unsure what to expect when adopting a dog of a mixed heritage, especially when part of the dog’s lineage is that of a Pit Bull. Fear not, Pit Bulls rank among the most loyal, affectionate, human-oriented, intelligent, and well tempered dogs on the planet. A good rule of thumb for all owners is to treat your Pit Bull mix as if it were a “purebred”, always remembering that in the eyes of the public and media a Pit Bull mix is practically the same thing as a purebred Pit Bull. Breed Profile – American Pit Bull Terrier

History:

Paisley, Owner: Flickr Member PaisleyPitbull  (Used in Accordance with CC Licence)The American Pit Bull Terrier was introduced to the US in the early 1800s by Boston-Irish immigrants. In America the Pit Bull flourished and was used in various WWI era war artwork, the Buster Brown Shoe Company and RCA used the breed as their mascot. A Pit Bull named Petie starred in Our Gang and a Pit mixed named Stubby became a decorated WWI hero. During this time the Pit Bull was loved and adored by the masses becoming America’s sweetheart. Since this time the Pit Bull has evolved into a marvelous working and companion dog; Pits are employed as therapy dogs, search and rescuers, police/armed services dogs, and livestock workers. They also compete in a variety of agility and organized dog sports including herding, conformation and obedience. This is one of the most versatile breeds on the planet, due in part to the harshness and physical demands of their early history. [Read more…]
