Ohio Passes Law to End BSL

February 21, 2012 by z3admin

Ohio Signs Bill to End BSL

BSL Ended in OhioToday is an exciting day for pit bull owners in Ohio and anti-BSL supporters worldwide. Earlier this morning, Governor Kasich signed Ohio House Bill 14 into law – effectively ending 25 years of discriminatory breed specific legislation geared toward pit bull-type dogs. Click here to read a background on BSL in Ohio

Ohio’s HB 14 not only reverses the previous law, but helps to strengthen current dangerous dog laws by focusing on irresponsible owners, instead of innocent family pets. Dog wardens and those working in animal rescue will now be able to use their time and resources to protect the public from verifiably dangerous dogs, instead of wrongly targeting family pets that simply “look the wrong way”.

Prior to today’s passing of HB 14, Ohio was the only state with laws that permitted the declaration of a vicious dog based only on the dog’s appearance, without taking temperament or other behavioral criteria into consideration.

It is my hope that other states and countries that have looked to Ohio to set the precedent for BSL will now re-evaluate their existing or proposed laws. As Ohio has shown, BSL is an expensive, ineffective way to prevent dog bites and other acts. At the end of the day, as reinforced by Ohio’s new legislation, the only way to truly keep the public protected and safe from the acts of dangerous dogs is to punish the careless, ignorant owners that have allowed and/or encouraged the behaviors.

Let the Sterilizations Begin

August 10, 2010 by z3admin

In San Bernardino, California, animal control will begin enforcing a newly implemented dog spay and neuter initiative to help control the pet population. I am still on the fence with this one. On one hand I think it’s great to enforce legislation that will ultimately prevent the excessive breeding and selling of dogs.  On the other hand it leaves a sour taste in my mouth that Pit Bull and “Pit Bull type dogs” are the only breeds being targeted.  This mandatory sterilization program reeks of BSL to me, just packaged a bit differently for the public to digest. Why BSL is Bad for Everyone

July 29, 2010 by z3admin

WARNING – The video contains graphic material.

This video shows why Breed Specific Bans do nothing to solve the problem of bad pit bull owners. Educating the public about pit bulls and the injustices people commit against them is one of the best ways to advocate for them. Our pit bulls can’t talk, so let this video be their voice. [Read more…]

First They Came for Pit Bulls

March 4, 2010 by z3admin

BSL or Breed Specific Legislation is a threat to ALL dogs, not just Pit Bulls or other “dangerous breeds”.  Basically, BSL looks at the breed of a certain dog instead of the behavior of one specific animal.  An analogy for BSL in humans would be racial profiling, due to the fact that it does not look at the characteristics of the individual, instead generalizing them to be true for an entire breed or race.  Think BSL doesn’t affect you because you only own labradors or golden retrievers?  Wrong.  If the knee-jerk reaction of BSL catches on in the way that many supporters of BSL hope it will, people will then see that once all of the Pit Bulls are gone, issues related to dog bites will still exist.  The proponents of BSL will then move onto the next breed, and so on, until BSL does affect you.  [Read more…]

PETA Sets New Record for Killing Animals

May 1, 2009 by z3admin

PETA, the “animal rights” organization that supports breed specific bans, and an end to ownership of animals as companions (for more information see the post – PETA’s Pit Bull and Companion Animal Policies) set a new record for 2008.  Documents published on the website PETA Kills Animals show that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals killed about 95 percent of the pets placed into their care during 2008, which translates into roughly 5-6 animals euthanized each day.  The public records available through the VA Department of Agriculture and Consumer services show PETA killed 2,124 pets in 2008, placing only 7 in adoptive homes.  Over the past 10 years PETA has slaughtered over 20,000 dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, and other pets.
