How to Build a Pit Bull Spring Pole

May 28, 2010 by z3admin 3 Comments

Don’t let what the mass media and other unsavvy outlets may lead you to believe, there is nothing wrong with letting your Pit Bull play with a Spring Pole. Spring Poles, also sometimes called Flirtpoles, have long been known to be excellent and highly enjoyable toys for Pit Bulls and other dog breeds, particularly terriers. They are perfect for owners with limited space and/or time because a Spring Pole can be placed pretty much anywhere, and takes very little upkeep.

Want to buy a spring pole? Save your time and money, and follow this step-by-step guide on how to make your own springpole!

This spring pole for a puppy was made by my brother-in-law for their puppy, Kaia. With just a few simple materials readily found at any Home Depot, and a little time, you can create an entertaining/durable toy for your dog.

Dan was kind enough to give me step by step instructions on how to build a spring pole suitable for pit bulls, as well as some pictures to help you in construction (plus some bonus shots of Kaia playing).  There is also a Spring Pole FAQ page at the end that addresses many questions about Springpoles for dogs.

How to Make a Spring Pole for Dogs

How to Make a Flirtpole

Eyelet hook attached directly to rafter. This small hook was used because Kaia is so light, you will need to adjust according to your pet's weight.

Spring is in the center attached to the rope with biting material (which, again, because Kaia is a puppy is a bit different than for an adult dog) and rope going to the hook in ceiling. The thin, red rope is the end attached to the hook, and the thick, black rope is going to the biting material.

Construct a Dog Springpole

The red rope connects the spring to a carabiner, which fastens on the hook that was placed in the rafter.

The black rope is connected to the biting material, which for a puppy like Kaia is a soft, rubber toy.

I have two red nose pits that absolutely are better behaved dogs now that they get spring pole time each day. The amount of testosterone that they posses ie ridiculous but the spring pole gives them an outlet for all of the pent up energy i would highly recommend for any dog owner!!!
