Pit Bull Hero – Pitbull Saves Family in Fire
Diamond, a 15 month old Pit Bull was given this year’s National Hero Dog award by the SPCA in Los Angeles.
Diamond showed this often misunderstood breed’s true colors during an apartment fire at the Steen residence last October. Diamond the Pit Bull not only stayed in the house with the Steen family’s oldest daughter when she was unable to escape, she actually laid on top of Sierra. By placing her body over top of Sierra she shielded her from fire, and remained in place even when it meant that she sustained burns on her own body. Sierra and Diamond were rescued by fire fighters, and have made a full recovery. [Read more…]
Cooked Bones and Dogs
10 Reasons Why Cooked Bones Are Bad For Dogs:
1. Broken teeth or torn gums. While certainly not life threatening, a broken tooth or injured gum can cause a lot of pain for your dog, and may also require pricey dental work.
2. Bone may get stuck in or around your dog’s lower jaw. Because of the way your dog’s mouth is shaped, bones can become easily lodged both within and around the lower jaw. Depending on the way the bone is jammed, this may require a veterinary visit for removal and/or treatment of the injured tissue.
3. Mouth and tongue may get cut or injured. Again, not necessarily deadly, but can prove to be a very painful experience for your pet and a costly one for you if the injured area becomes infected. [Read more…]

Pit Bulls Helping the Blind
This video is unbelievably touching – and a great piece of positive pit bull press! Pit bulls lend a helping paw to blind children, showing their true colors as lovable, loyal, intelligent and faithful companion animals.
The real story, however, is the fact that NBC decided to do a positive pit bull piece. Kudos to them for taking the road less traveled, despite Jillian Rappaport’s insistence on bringing the breed’s “bad rap” up more than once, and almost ending the segment with this suggestive line, “This is definitely an aggressive… not aggressive, but dominant, breed…”. A Pitbull and Chihuahua Love Story
The story below came to me via one of the many animal rescue email lists of which I am a member. Please take this opportunity, whether you’re snuggled up to your pittie cuddle buddy or prefer to remain on the other side of the fence from a Pit Bull, to put your stereotypes aside and read this story for what it truly is – A Love Story.
I am a Pennsylvania State Dog Warden and I received a call concerning two strays that showed up on a front porch early one morning.
When I got there, this is who greeted me: A female Pit Bull and a male Chihuahua .. The Chihuahua was guarding the Pit Bull!!!
They looked to have been on their own for a while. The Chihuahua was missing fur and the Pit Bull had an injured paw. I was able to slip a leash over the Pit Bull and walk her into a cage and put her in my truck.
However, the Chihuahua would not allow me to get near him but would not leave the Pit Bull behind…….So I thought of a plan to get the Chihuahua into my truck. [Read more…]
Skunk Smell Removal – What to do if your dog was sprayed by skunks
Help, my dog was sprayed by a skunk!
Most likely if you’re reading this post your dog has just recently been sprayed by a skunk, or there was a skunk incident in the past and you want to be prepared for the future, so let me cut to the chase. Below is a “recipe” for a skunk smell removal remedy that you can make with items around the house. All you’ll need is some hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and Dawn dish soap. Use this skunk neutralizing wash on your dog in the proportions mentioned below and let it sit on their fur for 20 minutes or so.
I used this shampoo when my dog was sprayed, and while I don’t claim it to be any type of magic potion that completely gets rid of skunk smell, it did cut down significantly on the odor and was effective in removing the oils from his skin. [Read more…]
Pit Bulls Save Chihuahua From Coyote
In Littleton, Colorado, Buster the Chihuahua mix went out early on a Saturday morning for his regular bathroom break. While outside taking care of his business, the Chihuahua was brutally attacked by a coyote in his owner’s backyard. Luckily for Buster, the neighbor’s Pit Bulls were also out doing their morning ritual at the same time, and they chased the coyote as it ran off with Buster. [Read more…]
Let the Sterilizations Begin
In San Bernardino, California, animal control will begin enforcing a newly implemented dog spay and neuter initiative to help control the pet population. I am still on the fence with this one. On one hand I think it’s great to enforce legislation that will ultimately prevent the excessive breeding and selling of dogs. On the other hand it leaves a sour taste in my mouth that Pit Bull and “Pit Bull type dogs” are the only breeds being targeted. This mandatory sterilization program reeks of BSL to me, just packaged a bit differently for the public to digest. [Read more…]
