Skunk Smell Removal – What to do if your dog was sprayed by skunks

Oct 11, 2010 by

Help, my dog was sprayed by a skunk!

Most likely if you’re reading this post your dog has just recently been sprayed by a skunk, or there was a skunk incident in the past and you want to be prepared for the future, so let me cut to the chase. Below is a “recipe” for a skunk smell removal remedy that you can make with items around the house. All you’ll need is some hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and Dawn dish soap. Use this skunk neutralizing wash on your dog in the proportions mentioned below and let it sit on their fur for 20 minutes or so.

I used this shampoo when my dog was sprayed, and while I don’t claim it to be any type of magic potion that completely gets rid of skunk smell, it did cut down significantly on the odor and was effective in removing the oils from his skin.

Pit Bulls Save Chihuahua From Coyote

Aug 12, 2010 by

In Littleton, Colorado, Buster the Chihuahua mix went out early on a Saturday morning for his regular bathroom break. While outside taking care of his business, the Chihuahua was brutally attacked by a coyote in his owner’s backyard. Luckily for Buster, the neighbor’s Pit Bulls were also out doing their morning ritual at the same time, and they chased the coyote as it ran off with Buster.

Let the Sterilizations Begin

Aug 10, 2010 by

In San Bernardino, California, animal control will begin enforcing a newly implemented dog spay and neuter initiative to help control the pet population. I am still on the fence with this one. On one hand I think it’s great to enforce legislation that will ultimately prevent the excessive breeding and selling of dogs.  On the other hand it leaves a sour taste in my mouth that Pit Bull and “Pit Bull type dogs” are the only breeds being targeted.  This mandatory sterilization program reeks of BSL to me, just packaged a bit differently for the public to digest.

Walter – A True Breed Ambassador

Aug 4, 2010 by

Walter the Pit Bull was left on the streets to die. See how this tiny puppy once affected with mange has blossomed into a happy, healthy and well adjusted adolescent.

Kudos to the Today Show and NBC for airing this Pit Bull positive article! We need more clips like this to be aired in the mainstream media to help change people’s perceptions about these wonderful dogs. MSNBC also featured a story of pit bull service/therapy dogs assisting blind children. The clip has since been removed from their website (not sure why), but you can read my thoughts on it here – Pit Bulls Helping the Blind

Tips to Keep Your Bully Safe

Aug 4, 2010 by

Unfortunately, owning a bully breed dog such as a Pit Bull, American Bulldog, Bull Terrier, etc. often means that you don’t catch any breaks. One small incident is all it takes to jeopardize the life you share with your pet. YOUR dog may not be trained to fight, but the propensity for fighting exists throughout their lineage, and it is in your dog’s best interest to protect them from situations that may escalate into trouble.

Keep in mind, while dogs are pack animals, the history of the Pit Bull and related breeds have created a dog whose pack is human in nature, not animal. They do not always do well meeting other dogs they do not already know, and in most instances it’s preferable to avoid it all together. Most of these dogs really can’t be bothered with making new dog friends, so do them a favor and always do introductions in a neutral zone, when both dogs are calm, and with owners who have a solid knowledge of their particular dog’s behaviors, mannerisms and preferences.
