Below is a list of all the dog-related airline incidents for all major North American carriers in the year 2007.
The list proceeds in a linear fashion from January to December. An explanation of colors – the incidents in green were not brachycephalic (snub nosed) individuals, and the incidents in yellow did not contain any information regarding the dog’s brachycephalic status. The incidents with a white background indicate that the dog was brachycephalic, meaning that they are considered to be short-nosed dogs. Brachycephalic dogs all appear to have “pushed in” faces (think Pugs and Pekigneese) and they suffer from difficulties relating to a compromised respiratory system, often referred to as brachycephalic respiratory syndrome. This syndrome includes characteristic features like very narrow nostrils (stenotic nares), an elongated soft palate and narrow windpipe (tracheal stenosis). All of these characteristics compounded make these dogs very succeptible to heat stroke, which is a major contributing factor in most instances of airline related death for dogs.
